This map evaluates the relationship between National Hockey League (NHL) teams and their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliates. An AHL affiliate is effectively a "minor league" team for their corresponding NHL team. These AHL teams serve as feeder teams for their NHL team, allow new players to get experience playing pseudo professionally, and are an opportunity for current NHL players to recuperate in a low stress (or at least less stressful) environment after injuries. This map displays NHL teams using the black puck symbol and AHL teams with the orange hockey stick symbol. Each NHL is linked to its AHL team using a line of the shortest distance between them. The map also uses Thiessen polygons to illustrate each NHL team's area of influence. Every point within these areas are closer to the NHL team than any other team, providing a mathematical way to illustrate a team's area of influence. The map also includes a table sorted alphabetically by NHL team and the distance to its corresponding AHL team.

I'm excited to share that this map won third place in the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI)'s 2022 map contest.
